‘Poona Kheera’ is an heirloom from India, the ancestral home of Cucumbers. The Romans brought seeds to Europe & the modern Cucumbers we know were developed from them. ‘Poona Kheera’ (from Poona) looks very different from what you may be used to. Initially the cucumbers are all white, then they turn yellow - the time at which to harvest them. They are crisp, unusually sweet & very long-lasting. The vines are strong & bear early heavy crops of 6” long, 3” wide Cukes. As with all Cucumbers it is important to harvest them regularly since even one developing seeds will stop further production. A mature ‘Poona Kheera’ turns into an extremely hard & ornamental fruit & could be grown as an ornamental only! Grow in rich soil, full sun & water consistently since dryness, as well overwatering, can lead to root problems. Trellising is highly recommended, though not necessary.
